YWIES Tongxiang Scholarship Recipients Interview | Growing Through Consistent Action

    • Each year, YWIES Tongxiang offers a range of scholarships to students who demonstrate potential in academic exploration, community contribution, creative talents and other areas. These scholarships recognise more than excellent academic results. They also value students' approaches to learning, capacity for independent thought, and sustained interests beyond the classroom.

In this feature, we meet two Grade 11 scholarship recipients—Emma and Radoslava—and explore how consistent action and active exploration have helped them discover their direction and grow.

      G11 Emma

Broadening the depth and breadth of learning through perseverance

“You don’t necessarily have to study for extremely long hours every day, but you do need to keep up with your work and avoid letting everything pile up.”

For Emma, the key to achieving strong results is not the number of hours spent studying each day, but consistency. Through sustained effort, she has gradually developed a learning approach that works for her: balancing work and rest, prioritising tasks effectively, and studying assessment criteria carefully to understand the logic behind each question.

For Emma, learning is not about passively completing assignments. It is an active process of exploration and discovery. Her independent approach has taken her academic interests beyond the curriculum. Curious about how “the brain and life function”, she studied independently using materials from the Brain Bee competition and took part in interdisciplinary academic summer programmes. These experiences introduced her to new questions, approaches and fields of knowledge beyond the classroom. Rather than simply seeking the right answer, she is more interested in how questions are formulated and what further questions they might inspire.

Her interests also extend into campus life. She actively participates in frama, choir and the Student Council, putting her enthusiasm into practice across a diverse range of activities. Performing on stage and working as part of a team have strengthened her time management, sense of responsibility and communication skills, while helping her develop greater confidence and inner resilience.

Perseverance does not mean accomplishing something extraordinary every day. It means taking each task seriously: making steady progress with academic work, engaging wholeheartedly in every activity, and exploring questions that spark curiosity. Emma’s growth has emerged gradually through these consistent and purposeful actions.

      G11 Radoslava

Exploring the world of AI through diligence

“I’m not someone who is naturally gifted academically, says Radoslava.”

When faced with abstract calculations and complex concepts, she does not wait for a sudden flash of inspiration. Instead, she builds her knowledge systematically through continued practice, reflection and review.

This grounded approach is also evident in her scientific exploration. As a member of the school’s VEX Robotics team, she is responsible for writing and debugging autonomous programmes. Robotics requires repeated testing, systematic troubleshooting and effective collaboration within limited time. Through this process, she has come to understand that seemingly simple results are often the product of repeated trial and error and continuous refinement.

The school’s rich STEM learning opportunities have provided her with further scope for practical exploration. Through computer science, robotics and project-based learning, she has encountered programming, automation, engineering design and problem-solving in authentic contexts. Radoslava particularly appreciates the encouragement she receives from her computer science teacher: “As someone who is cautious and afraid of uncertainty, I’m always being encouraged—almost persuaded—to try new things.”

With this support, she has moved from being afraid of making mistakes to becoming willing to experiment. Her interest in emerging technologies has also led her towards broader fields. During the summer of 2026, Radoslava applied to attend the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), where she further explored cutting-edge topics such as reinforcement learning. This experience helped her connect abstract concepts with the real world.

From feeling uncertain when she first joined the school to actively planning around her interests today, Radoslava’s growth has not happened overnight. It has been built through daily accumulation and supported by the school’s encouragement of curiosity and exploration.

      A Diverse Curriculum

Creates More Possibilities for Future Study

Although the two students have taken different paths, both have benefited from continued experimentation, exploration and the support of a diverse learning environment.

At YWIES Tongxiang, students can discover their interests and broaden their horizons through core academic studies, STEM education, interdisciplinary enquiry, and arts and sports programmes. They can apply their knowledge to real-world challenges, while developing communication, leadership and responsibility through performances, teamwork and community activities. In the process, they gain a deeper understanding of themselves and realise their potential.

At the end of their interviews, both scholarship recipients shared their hopes for the future. They look forward to continuing to develop their interests, discussing new questions with like-minded peers, exploring broader fields of knowledge and finding ways to apply their learning to real-world issues.

For them, the scholarship is not only recognition of their efforts so far, but also encouragement for the journey ahead: to remain curious, take consistent action and continue shaping their own paths through exploration.
