    • Hong Kong DSE Grading

Unlike traditional exams, the Hong Kong DSE uses a grading system rather than exact scores, with grades like A, B, C, D, and E. For example, a B grade might correspond to a score range of 81-87, meaning both 82 and 87 would be graded as B. This system is based on the concept of "criteria-referencing".

      From "Norm-distribution" to "Criterion-referencing"

      • Normal Distribution: Previously, the Hong Kong Examinations Authority used a norm-referenced grading method, assuming student scores follow a normal distribution, with most students at the average level and few achieving very high or low scores. Graders adjusted scores to fit this distribution.

      • Criterion-Referencing: The DSE now uses a criterion-referenced grading system. It establishes "cut-off points" to divide scores into different grades. Students earn a grade by meeting specific criteria, independent of overall student performance.

      What is a Cut-off Point?

This means that if a student achieves over 82% accuracy in the math exam, they will be awarded Level 5*, regardless of how many students reach this level. Cut-off points vary by subject.

For example, here are the 2023 DSE Chinese Language cut-off points:

      Importance of Grading Criteria

Teaching, learning, and assessment are closely linked. Teachers must master content and deeply understand evaluation criteria, similar to athletes knowing scoring rules.

Accurate assessments are crucial; underrating a good student can demotivate them, while overrating an underperforming student can lead to underestimating the DSE's difficulty, affecting results.
